day100 - more 35mm from Studio Calico

It's my turn up at the SCT blog today and I decided to do something with confetti.  They always do a fun celebration for day 100 at school, and I thought confetti was the way to go in celebration for this layout.  Check out the blog for a breakdown of the design.

I used the 35mm kit for this one, except for the veneer cameras, which I was unable to resist.  :)  Such a good price point.  There are so many in one package!

My confetti is under a layer of vellum.  I'm LOVING the vellum lately.

I hope you are having a wonderful Monday!  Enjoy the day.

P.S.  Check out the Last Call section at SC.  Some GREAT stamps for sale right now.  I love love the layout I made with this set.

From my 35mm - Studio Calico kit reveal

May kit reveal

It's that time again!  The 35MM kit and add-ons are live and available for purchase at Studio Calico.

I purchased Leica, Holga, and Lomography this month.  I'm not sure why I didn't choose Brownie other than to say you can't buy everything all the time, you know?

First up is my main kit layout:

I felt like making those triangle/ chevrons again, and wanted to make a little T ball layout for my #4, Payton.

The title and the baseball stitches were created with my Cameo.

I love these next two.

I love the Lomography add-on because I covet that MME polaroid paper.  I cut it in to bits and had a lot of fun with the bits for this layout about Morgan at Eight:

The tag under the M and the banners were also in the Lomography add-on.

Holga had the fun twist on the ampersand stamp as well as the fun Cosmo Cricket tags.  That's where the black washi and the title alphas came from too.  I had to have that touch of pink!  I also loved the pink crystals.

The M and the triangle piece are scraps from my main kit layout which is fun.  Use those scraps!

This last layout was a long time coming.  I'm not sure why I haven't put these photos on a layout before, but I'm really glad I did and finally got the story out, about the first moment Morgan and Payton met:

This layout was about the photos and the journaling, but I did have fun with the details at the top.

I'll share how I came up with that chevron piece in a tutorial soon.  The word "sight" was created with my cameo and the Pacifico font.  I adore the wood buttons, those are in the Leica add-on.  Leica actually has a lot of fun embellishments in it that I didn't get to.  Be sure to check that one out.

Once I was finished with layouts, it was on to cards:

The "remember when' sentiment was created by chopping into a piece of Cosmo Cricket paper.  Tons of sentiment ideas there.

That's it for 35mm this month!  Thanks for stopping by!

P.S.  Check out this post below for tips on memory keeping and why you need to pick up the Heidi Swapp Memory file sytem.

thoughts on Memory Keeping

It wasn't long after I had Payton that I started to feel totally overwhelmed by the amount of STUFF that comes with having children.  If you are a scrapbooker or memory keeper, you save everything.  They have little slips of paper at the doctor's office with cute little bears or storks on them with places to note height and weight each time you bring your baby in for a checkup.  When your kids are born Gerber sends you a flyer for a FREE monogrammed spoon!  From birth on, there are tons of keepsakes that make their way into your home, but there comes a point when you do NOT know what to do with it all.

And then they go to preschool and come home with a daily craft project, some swipes of red paint on an 11x17 piece of paper or macaroni and punched stars glued to a yellow piece of construction paper for yellow day.

It just adds up.

What do you do with it?????

When Morgan was little I decided I would take photos of her preschool artwork and make a book out of it through Shutterfly or another online photo book maker.  That solved that dilemma.  But I still get overwhelmed with the awards and school papers and Lifetouch photos and report cards and was having trouble finding a good system to save it all until a relatively simple idea I saw on Pinterest slapped me in the forehead with a "duh" moment.  Why do I always make things more difficult than they need to be?

Enter plastic.  Plastic containers with secure lids.  And file folders.

I purchased one container for each of my daughters and enough file folders for each year of their lives thus far to start.  In each file are all those bits of memorabilia that hasn't been framed somewhere and didn't end up in a mini album or scrapbook layout.  They are things like report cards, school photos, that soccer team photo, award ribbons, and things like that.  Until I decide on a hope chest or something of that sort, I have a separate container for each girl where I keep special outfits, shoes, trophies, and things like that.  The big stuff I can't get rid of.  I label each with a big manila tag from Staples that I've either handwritten on, or typed on my old typewriter if I had the chance.

This system has taken care of a lot of clutter and seriously made my life so much easier.  I store these containers in our storage building.  Not many people have the extra space.  Maybe you use the garage or the attic.

Obviously I don't want to take up the space to house these containers in the house all year long.  That's why I was super excited to see Heidi Swapp's Memory file system (2peas) products come out at CHAW12.  The folders are super cute and compact.  These files can be kept in your scrapbook room, handy for current events, the current school year, your child's age, and the contents transferred to your big plastic storage containers as it gets full or the school year ends.  It's the perfect storage system for me!  Will it hold your daughter's ballet recital costume that you can't bear to to part with?  No.  But it'll hold that cute story she wrote about your dog or her "Citizen of the month" certificate and  the little ribbon she earned in March!  I'm all over it.  I was thinking teal but I actually think I will go with the black.  One for each girl.

I love the little file folders too because you can then separate the things you file away, or sort them if you have a lot of memorabilia from a specific event, etc.  I also adore the labels (but those may go straight to a scrapbook page).

Anyway, I just wanted to share a really fun system that is making things so much easier for me.  I've got a clutter catastrophe at casa de Fiero, but this is really helping me sort through things, and preserve those items my kids outgrow or are given that I can't let go of or donate.

If you've got another great idea for this type of storage link me up.  I feel like I'm always making things harder than they really need to be.

Have a great day!  See you tonight with projects for the Studio Calico 35mm kit reveal!

From my 35MM - Sneak time.

Good Monday Morning.

I'm about to go observe a classmate teach a lesson on oviparous/viviparous animals with a group of Kindergarten kids (oviparous = animals that lay eggs), but wanted to stop for a minute and share some of my kit work.  My scissors had a workout this month.  I did use my Cameo, but there was also a lot of hand cutting.  Good busy work.

I picked up three add-ons this month for the 35MM kit.  Leica, Holga, and Lomography.  The only reason I didn't pick up Brownie this month is because I got three add-ons.  That's plenty!  :)  It's hard to pick a favorite because I liked a little about  everything, but I think the main kit was my favorite.  I really liked the exclusives this month.

Sneak peek:

Main kit:

This is my main kit only layout.  The title was trimmed with my Cameo, but the chevrons were hand cut (you can check out my little tutorial on doing that here).

I adore this layout because I used some photos I have never scrapped but am so fortunate to have.  Looking forward to sharing this one with you.  I couldn't pick between add-ons because I adored the buttons so much and there are plain wood buttons in Leica, and delicious printed wood buttons in Lomography.

This last sneak used a lot of scissor work.  The striped tag is from Lomography.  One of the best parts?  The M is the negative from my title work, and that yellow triangle is also left over from the chevrons I used in my title.  Look at those scraps put to use!

That's it for sneaks for today.  Ta ta for now.  Wish me luck!  Tomorrow I'm teaching a lesson on dinosaurs and we are making dinosaur eggs!  So fun and I'll share it here on a crafTuesday post soon.

Project 12 March in April

BAM.  It had to go back.  There is no reason to change something if it is working just fine, and the traditional method for Project 12 works just fine.  So Becky doesn't do sketches for me anymore?  That's fine.  I have lots of previous sketches to choose from.  I still should document the month the way I document the month and have been documenting the month for the last few years.  It's so good to be back!  :)

For this month's challenge I chose a sketch from May 2011.  It looks like this:

And this is what I came up with:

A change for the challenge that I'm having fun with is the Color Suite monthly challenge.  You can check out the color palette for this month here

I wanted to create a fun design element for this layout, so punched out a couple of circles from vellum, as well as some confetti, and stitched it together.  As we had two birthdays in March, this adds a bit of festivity to the layout too.  Love that.

I also love my journaling spot.  But you know that.

For fun I thought I'd check out what I did with the May 2011 sketch when it originally came out.  You can check out that post here

Oh my, it feels good to be back in my comfort zone.  Doing that daily thing was driving me nuts, although I do need to find a better workflow as I have been keeping memorabilia and more daily photos with my phone.  I just don't know what that method is yet, and I'm still really happy with the monthly recap and so is my family.

I'll see you back here for Project 12 again on May 15.  If you want entered for a chance at a prize at SCT, check out my Project 12 post and link your layout there.  I randomly draw a winner.

ETA:  AND I forgot to add that I've already chosen the next sketch I'm going to use.  I'm going back to January 2010 for this one.

Studio Calico love - Teacher's Pet

Up on the Studio Calico blog today is a new layout I created with the new collections Take Note and Abroad (you can still win a Take Note Collection pack on this post).

I'm in Grad School.  Getting my degree in Elementary Education.  Being crafty makes some aspects of this program really easy for me, and recently we had to demonstrate a teaching method in class and my partner and I decided to do a workshop where my classmates did a craft project.  I needed some slides of kids creating this project, so of course I asked my girls to help me out and they were excited to participate.  They love that I'm in school.  Payton tells her classmates about it all the time and really wants me to be her teacher someday.  :)

I had to do a layout about it all and came up with this:

My layout:

I had fun with my Cameo on this one, but if you don't have one, you can use scissors or a blade and still come up with the same design.  I mixed different apple "flavors" for this design and added strips to balance the design.  "Teachers" was trimmed with the Pacifico font, and I used Mister Huey in Passport for my title alphas.

The badge was a perfect finishing touch.

Have a great Wednesday!  Davinie
